Defence High Performance Computing Centre

Builder: Hansen Yuncken | Client: Department of Defence | Service: Waterproofing, Epoxy Flooring & Anti-Static Flooring | Location: RAAF Base Edinburgh, South Australia | Status: Complete

The Defence High Performance Computing Centre (DHPCC) at RAAF Base Edinburgh is a high-security, purpose-built data centre designed to house the Australian Army’s sovereign supercomputing capability. The facility supports the Defence Science and Technology Group (DST Group) with world-class capability for high-fidelity modelling, simulation, and analysis — critical to Australia’s national security and AUKUS priorities including nuclear-powered submarines, quantum technologies, and artificial intelligence.

At its core is Taingiwilta (Kaurna for powerful) — a supercomputer up to a million times faster than a standard computer. The facility incorporates a Secure Compartmentalised Information Facility (SCIF) and international-standard secure conferencing, and was built to the highest security and integrity classifications.

Floortek was engaged by Hansen Yuncken to deliver three distinct flooring and waterproofing scopes across the facility:

  • Anti-static epoxy flooring system — main data hall: Purpose-specified anti-static system to control electrostatic discharge (ESD) and protect sensitive supercomputing infrastructure from static damage
  • Non-slip epoxy coatings — main thoroughfares: Durable, non-slip epoxy coatings throughout the facility’s main circulation and access areas
  • Exposed trafficable waterproofing membrane — rooftop plant area: High-performance waterproofing membrane system to the concrete rooftop, designed to remain trafficable for ongoing maintenance access to mechanical and electrical plant

Working within a high-security defence facility required rigorous compliance with access controls, security clearance requirements, and Defence facility protocols throughout the project. All three scopes were delivered within Hansen Yuncken’s construction program.
